MONUMENT

VALLEY

Monument Valley is a place of wonder and awe. The Navajo meaning behind the name is "Valley of the rocks). It is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 feet above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona/Utah state line.

The beautiful formations and the valley's vivid red color comes form iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue -gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide.

Monument Valley is officially a large area that includes much of the area surrounding Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a Navajo Nation equivalent to a national park. Visitors can pay an access fee and drive through the park on a 17 mile dirt road. Tours are also available and vary between about 40.00 to 100.00 dollars per person. There is also horseback riding, overnight camping trips, and hot air balloon flights are available May 1st through October 31st. Also there are from time to time small airplane flights. There is also plenty of hiking, backpacking, cycling, and other activities to do in Monument Valley.

Monument Valley is a place of reflection, and the expanse and views of roadways disappearing below the horizon make you feel the vastness of God's creative forces. Death Valley National Park also has this feel to it. The only downside is the fine red powder that is made up of iron oxide as mentioned above. It gets everywhere in your shoes, clothing, and vehicles if you are out there and active. So make sure you have a change of shoes and clothing before you bring all that silt into your vehicle. This great valley boasts sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet. framed by scenic clouds casting shadows that graciously roam the desert floor. The angle of the sun accents these graceful formations, providing scenery that is simply spellbinding.

The landscape overwhelms, and is a mecca for photographers. The sandstone masterpieces tower anywhere from 400 to 1000 feet in height and are framed by scenic clouds casting magical shadows the make the desert floor seem to come alive. Along with all this, the fragile pinnacles of rock are surrounded by miles of mesas and buttes, shrubs, trees and windblown sand. The magnificent colors of the valley are at their best during sunrise and sunset hours. It is truly a wondrous place to visit and you will find great enjoyment in all you see and do in Monument Valley.
