GRAND

CANYON

The Grand Canyon is truly one of the wonders of the world. It is an inspiring landscape to say the least. It is 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide with a depth of 5280 feet. This landscape has inspired painters and photographers as well as explorers for decades.

The most popular destinations in Grand Canyon are the South Rim and North Rim. The South Rim is open year round, but the North Rim due to the fact that it is at a much higher in elevation (over 8,000 ft above sea level), is only open from mid-May to mid-October. During the winter months, the road to the North Rim, via Highway 67 is often closed due to snow. Having spent time at both the South and North Rim, I find the North Rim to be much more beautiful. It is much more out of the way in terms of access, but I find the round trip to the North Rim well worth it.

Hiking and River Rafting are a couple of the more popular activities in Grand Canyon. But if you choose to hike to the bottom of the canyon, then you need to be prepared for the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. Since most people choose to visit the park in the summer, water is crucial when it comes to doing any hiking, especially if you take on the hike to the bottom of the canyon. Also remember that even though you will have (for the most part) an easy time on the way down, the 5,280 vertical gain to reach the top again can be quite challenging and you definitely need to be in shape to make the journey. You will also need a permit to do the hike. All overnight camping also requires a permit. If you don't feel up to the strain of the hike to the bottom and back, you can also join an outfitter and go via pack train on mules. To do this, however, make sure you make your reservations well in advance because this activity is extremely popular. River Rafting is also an incredible way to see Grand Canyon from below, and there are plenty of outfitters that will be happy to take you down the Colorado River. The trips range from leisurely to quite adventuresome. But like the mule trips to the bottom you need to reserve well in advance because private and professional river trips book up solid as far as one to two years in advance.

Weather can also be a factor when visiting the Grand Canyon and summer thunderstorms between July and September provide plenty of beauty and excitement, but they also come along with potential danger. If you should be caught in a lightning storm, make sure you stay away from high points and ridges.

As you can see there is much to do and see in the Grand Canyon, so if you can, make plans to see this great wonder of the world, and don't forget to bring your camera so that you can bring back many memories of the beauty you will see!
