NATIONAL PARK

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah in the United States, and is certainly another example of how much beauty we are blessed with here in the United States. The park is famous for it's unique geology which consists of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The erosive forces of frost-wedging in the rock and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colorful limestone rock into bizarre shapes, including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos".

The Bryce area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850's and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1874. It became a National Monument in 1923 and a National Park in 1928. The Park covers 35,835 acres. But even with all this beauty available, it is the least visited park in the area with the Grand Canyon taking first place and Zion second. The town of Kanab, Utah is the central town between the aforementioned National Parks. Bryce being a thousand feet higher than Zion has cooler temperatures and receives more precipitation at between 15-18 inches a year. Under snow in the winter months, the scenery is both spectacular and magical.

Rainbow Point is the highest part of the park at 9,105 feet and is located along the 18 mile scenic drive. Along the way you will find Sunrise Point and Sunset Point. The points are well named, and if you want to see the National Park at it's best, it is well worth your effort to be at those points respectively at sunrise and sunset, for the park is a photographers paradise.

You can have a wonderful time seeing the sites of Bryce in you vehicle and even better if you get out and take a short walk to the scenic points in the park, but you will really get the feel of the wonders that Bryce has to offer if you do some day hiking among the "hoodoos" (hoodoos are the magical rock formations and spires that you see all over the park) The park also has two trails designated for overnight hiking: the 9 mile "Riggs Spring Loop Trail" and the 23 mile "Under the Rim Trail" In the winter, there are more than 10 miles of marked but un-groomed skiing trails. The park also has a 7.4 magnitude night sky, making it one of the darkest in North America. Stargazers can therefore see 7,500 stars with the naked eye. Compare this only being able to see a few dozen stars in the night sky of most cities around the United States, and you will quickly realize that it will be well worth you while to go out at night and take in the vastness of God's incredible creation. As mentioned above, Bryce is a great place for landscape photographers. With Bryce Canyon's high altitude and clean air, the sunrise and sunset photographs can be spectacular.
